Digital Resources to support the Math Teaching Toolkit

The math department is producing videos to help you implement the SFUSD Core Curriculum and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

To watch a video fullscreen, use the "Pop-out" button on the upper right corner of the video.
We currently have three types of videos and are migrating these to separate pages.

Please see:
  • Videos that help explain complex Math Concepts
  • Videos that illustrate the SFUSD Signature Strategies
  • Videos that introduce some of our preferred Technology Tools
If there are other videos that you would find helpful, please let us know by sending us a note via our contact form.

Math Concepts

Multiplication of Decimals

This 6 minute video shows how to use Base 10 Blocks to model multiplication of decimals.

Division of Fractions

This 8 minute video discusses how to think conceptually about division of fractions.
Here are more resources for this topic:
A nifty video about partitive and quotitive division from PBS Learning.

This succinct paper from Donna Curry (TERC) explains many of the ideas in this video.

A video from Graham Fletcher that traces the progression of division from Grade 3 to Grade 5.

Composition and Decomposition of Numbers

This 3 minute video discusses composition and decomposition of number from Kindergarten through 3rd grade and beyond. It also explains subitizing and how it supports decomposition of number.

Signature Strategies

Math Talks

This 5 minute video shows a Math Talk in a 5th grade classroom.

Math Talks are short, ongoing daily routines that provides students with meaningful practice with mental math and discourse. They are  structured as short sessions alongside (but not necessarily directly related to) the ongoing math curriculum.

More information here.

3-Read Protocol

This 15 minute video shows how to use the 3-Read Protocol.

The Three Read Protocol is one way to do a close read of a complex math word problem or task. This strategy includes reading a math scenario three times with a different goal each time. The first read is to understand the context. The second read is to understand the mathematics. The third read is to elicit inquiry questions based on the scenario.

Technology Tools

Technology is a growing component of the SFUSD Mathematics Core Curriculum and should always be used in the service of math learning. The guiding question for SFUSD technology and math integration is: How might we increase the impact on student learning and decrease the barriers for math teachers to use technology to promote both discourse and the target math?

Desmos: Tile Piles

This 7 minute video explains how to use an activity from Desmos.com : Tile Piles.
