Strategy Videos

The math department is producing videos to help you implement the SFUSD Core Curriculum and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.  These videos illustrate some of the SFUSD Signature and Supporting Strategies.

Math Talks

This 5 minute video shows a Math Talk in a 5th grade classroom.

Math Talks are short, ongoing daily routines that provides students with meaningful practice with mental math and discourse. They are  structured as short sessions alongside (but not necessarily directly related to) the ongoing math curriculum.

3-Read Protocol

This 15 minute video shows how to use the 3-Read Protocol.

The Three Read Protocol is one way to do a close read of a complex math word problem or task. This strategy includes reading a math scenario three times with a different goal each time. The first read is to understand the context. The second read is to understand the mathematics. The third read is to elicit inquiry questions based on the scenario.

Multiple Abilities Strategy

This 10 minute video shows hightlights of the Multiple Abilities Strategy being used in a 5th grade classroom.

The Multiple Abilities Strategy is a strategy that teachers use to launch a lesson or task that involves collaborative groupwork. It is a way to communicate to students the variety of strengths and abilities, including skills, understandings, and mathematics practices, that are required to be successful in a given task.
