Updates from the Early Education Department

PK Math Units
The first weeks of the year are a great time to introduce math materials for exploration. These materials will later become standard math tools:  Markers, counting bears, pattern blocks, magna-tiles, ten frames, magnetic numbers, unit blocks, glue and paper, dot cards, snap cubes, glue, bowls, beads, geoboards. dice, simple bingo games and other simple board games.

Unit 1, Counting and Cardinality 1-10, contains the most important concepts of PK math. We encourage teachers and paras to start reviewing the tasks in September and begin working on the tasks with the kids towards the end of September. Teachers may choose activities from the lesson series as practice. We ask that teachers do the four tasks of Unit 1 with small groups of children as an assessment,  We have scheduled three months for the first unit.

If you have any questions, please contact your coach or Barbara Chisholm (chisholmb@sfusd.edu) for clarifications. Some schools have used their team meetings to share and explore math ideas. Your coach can work with you on creating a mini math PD.

The PK math units are complete and they are available electronically. If anyone is not able to access them that way, they can be sent in pdf form. The EED office has some hard copies available as well.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)
We have made progress in the TK units. There is a team working on the curriculum, borrowing from both PK and K curriculum.

EED will offer two 1/2 day PDs with a focus on the Math Core Curriculum.

Please Contact Barbara Chisholm (chisholmb@sfusd.edu) for more information.
