Programs and Support
Just as the CCSS-M define content and practice standards, successful implementation requires changes to both the materials and the pedagogy used in classrooms. The SFUSD Math Core Curriculum units provide the new materials, while professional development provided by the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Mathematics Department will support the new pedagogy.
The purpose of math PD is to build a shared, district-wide understanding of mathematics instruction and assessment that aligns with the CCSS-M, using the standards as both the catalyst and the vehicle for change. Teachers, site leaders, and district leaders must grapple with what rich mathematics looks like in the classroom, in student work, and in curriculum and assessments. This learning is ongoing.

Every site, PreK–12, has a teacher leader team. Teacher Leaders work with site administrators to support ongoing collaborative planning and professional learning at their sites. Teacher Leaders foster an understanding of the development of mathematical concepts in the Core Curriculum units and pedagogical structures that support the Standards for Mathematical Practice. They receive professional development on curriculum, pedagogy, and supporting peer collaboration from the Curriculum and Instruction Department.
Each SFUSD School, K–12 has a Math Content Specialist (TSA) liaison attached to them as a resource. Download the lists for Elementary and K–8 TSA Liaisons or the Secondary TSA Liaison.
