Elementary Core Curriculum Revision 2016-2017

Picture
Our SFUSD Math Core Curriculum is undergoing another round of revision based on feedback from teachers all across the district.

Next year, we will be printing and delivering the curriculum in two batches:
  • Elementary curriculum will be delivered in August 2016 and January 2017
  • Secondary curriculum will be delivered in August and December 2016

Units will available in digital format by the end of June for the first batch in order to accommodate planning in advance of delivery of the phsyical copies.

A calendar will be included to help teachers with monthly and yearly planning.

What is NOT changing:

  • Almost everything. Scope and Sequences (with exceptions noted below) remains the same
  • General format of unit
  • Most lessons and tasks
  • Most homework

What IS changing:

  • Typos and errors fixed as much as possible.
  • More purposeful and focused use of models.
  • Some lessons have been simplified or condensed to more easily fit in a class period.
  • More specific references to fluency will be included
Lesson Guidance:
  • Clearer guidance for Key Math to Observe during the “Explore”
  • Clearer guidance for Key Math to Emphasize during the “Summarize”
  • More explicit direction for using the 5 practices (Select / Sequence / Connect) to bridge the Explore and Summarize
  • Challenges and Misconceptions and Universal Support are now presented side-by-side to more clearly show the connection between the two.

Ease of use:
  • Card sorts will be formatted to be easier to cut out
Icons in the lesson plan will alert teachers to:
  • Lessons requiring extra preparation
  • Signature strategies (Math Talks, 3-Read Protocol, and Groupwork Feedback)
  • Use of Math Notebooks and Anchor Charts
Banks
  • K-5: Math Talks Bank at the beginning of every unit which will include possible student responses. Math Talks will still be listed individually in the unit.
  • K-2: Daily Routines Bank at the beginning of every unit. Daily Routines will no longer be included as part of the body of the lesson.
  • K-2: Learning Stations Bank at the beginning of every unit

Specific Elementary grade level changes

Kindergarten
  • Scope & Sequence: remaining the same
  • Number line will shift to a line of numbered dots at regular intervals
  • Homework pages will be printed one sided

Grade 1
  • Scope & Sequence: remaining the same
  • More focused use of visual diagrams - The Tape Diagram will be used in way that will eliminate the need for Parts-Total Diagram and Comparison Diagram.
  • Units 1.3, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 will include experiences with balances to support the understanding of the equal sign.
  • The number line will shift to look more like a bar model and will be used more throughout the units.

Grade 2
  • Unit 2.1 (Measuring Time) moved to 2.3
  • Unit 2.2 (Grouping Objects) moved to 2.1
  • Unit 2.3 (Measuring Length) moved to 2.2
  • Time has moved to unit 2.3, after students have experienced Measuring Length so that we can make connections between the two. Time is also emphasised throughout the year during Calendar Routines. The focus of Unit 1 - Grouping Objects, will put more emphasis on the standards for Operations and Algebraic Thinking, using money as a vehicle with less emphasis on adding and subtracting. Money is also incorporated in units 2.4, 2.5, 2.7 and 2.9.

Grade 3
  • Scope & Sequence: remaining the same
  • Multiplication units will incorporate more manipulatives and games
  • Number line and tape diagrams connect repeated addition to multiplication with arrays
  • 3 "levels" of multiplication strategies - counting all, skip counting, and using the properties of operations - will help students progress from level to level
  • The distributive property will be introduced earlier as a strategy for building towards fluency with multiplication facts

Grade 4
  • Unit 4.4 (Factors and Multiples) moved to 4.7, 4.5-4.6 moved up, so that the division unit follows the multiplication unit, connecting the two topics.

Grade 5
  • Scope & Sequence: remaining the same
  • Homework added to all tasks in the first few units
