Support for Implementation of the SFUSD Mathematics Core Curriculum

San Francisco Unified School District is committed to a district-wide implementation of the CCSS-M that effectively impacts math learning for all PK–12 students and is both deep and sustainable. This commitment is in keeping with the first strategy for success in SFUSD’s Strategic Plan, “Implement the SFUSD Core Curriculum and use student data to make informed decisions and monitor our progress toward goals.”

Support for Implementation

Just as the CCSS-M define content and practice standards, successful implementation requires changes to both the materials and the pedagogy used in classrooms. The SFUSD Math Core Curriculum units provide the new materials, while professional development provided by the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Mathematics Department will provide the new pedagogy. The main structure for PD will be a Teacher Leader model, in which 2 to 4 teachers from each school site serve as a Math Leadership Team to collaboratively plan and organize site-based PD along with structured support from the C&I Mathematics Department.

The purpose of math PD is to build a shared, district-wide understanding of mathematics instruction and assessment that aligns with the CCSS-M, using the standards as both the catalyst and the vehicle for change. Teachers, site leaders, and district leaders must grapple with what rich mathematics looks like in the classroom, in student work, and in curriculum and assessments. This learning is ongoing. A successful effort requires a shift in culture at the classroom, site, and district level to support continued, collaborative inquiry and growth.

Teacher Leader Launch-day Materials

Teacher leaders can download all materials from the Spring Teacher Leader Release day here.  This includes the PowerPoint Presentation, as well as all handouts.  The download will be in the form of a zip file.

Math Core Curriculum Units

The SFUSD Math Core Curriculum Units will be used district-wide beginning in 2014-15.  These units, developed by over 100 district teachers are aligned to the new Common Core State Standards.

Professional development provided by the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Mathematics Department will help teacher leaders facilitate implementation of the units at their sites.

  • All units are built around rich math tasks and will be ready for instruction for 2014-15, copied and delivered centrally.
  • Translations of the rich math tasks will be provided in Spanish, Chinese, and Korean.
  • CLAs will align with and be embedded in the curriculum and emulate the structures of SBAC.
  • Standards based report cards for Elementary for 2014-2015 will reflect the CCSS-M.
  • Student materials will be copied centrally and delivered to sites.
